Aussie Compressor Manufacturer Confirms Yanmar Diesel Engine of Choice
As far as competitive industry sectors go, compressors are about as tough as it gets. While many have been content to merely survive through the GFC, Brisbane based manufacturer Glenco has excelled.
While there are many factors that have underscored the success at Glenco, there is one which stands head and shoulders above the rest; quality. At the heart of the quality, the equation is the legendary Yanmar L series of diesel engines powering the range of Airmac branded compressors.
Having purchased Glenco in 2002, MD Paul Korganow quickly realised that there was no future in local compressor manufacture due to the high cost of local labour and materials. At this time Glenco was building and supplying piston compressor sets driven by an electric motor or a small petrol engine.
With an eye to the future, Paul Korganow went to his suppliers to develop compressor sets to suit the Australian market. The outcome was a line of custom designed and manufactured compressors, of better quality and more competitively priced than those previously manufactured by Glenco in Australia.
Five years ago Paul Korganow sensed a shift in the local market.
“Ever so gradually the demand started to shift to a mining-driven compressor product,” Paul said.
“Contractors and others heading to the mines to do work were asking for a diesel-powered piston compressor. Subsequently, Glenco became the first in Australia to develop a complete range of these diesel/piston machines. At the time our competitors were offering the odd model here and there.
Glenco started about 6 years ago with Yanmar, introducing the Yanmar L series single cylinder diesel engine to the range.
Today the Yanmar L series engine is the backbone of the Airmac product range. These are piston compressors which are manufactured overseas with a Fusheng compressor then imported to Australia as an SKD package.
The Yanmar L Series is a single cylinder air cooled diesel engine. The power output varies from 4.7 hp (L48 Series), 6.7 hp (L70 Series) to 10hp (L100 series). All three models are purchased and fitted by Glenco.
Once the Airmac branded compressors land Glenco’s facility in Brisbane, the team install the specified Yanmar L series engine along with a host of additional hardware. In standard configuration, the Airmac is a mine spec package with an emergency stop system. The Yanmar supplied electronic fuel stop kit is fitted to the Yanmar L series engines by the Yanmar distributor, Power Equipment, in Melbourne before the engines are shipped to Glenco.
This is a premium product developed specifically for the demanding Australian market, specifically the mining sector.
“Yanmar is our diesel engine of choice,” said Paul Korganow.
“The power options within the L series suits us really well. There is an excellent spread of power, much better than competitive brands.”
“The Yanmar brand has an excellent name in the industry. It is well accepted and is a good match for us at Glenco. We very rarely see any service or reliability issues, and that is important as our products are sent all over Australia to some very remote locations where the work is demanding and difficult.”
“And if that’s not enough the support from Power Equipment, the Australian Distributor for Yanmar, is absolutely first rate. The support at Power Equipment from the sales force, the service support and parts back up is miles ahead of their competition.”
In addition to the Airmac range of compressors, Glenco also specifies the Yanmar 3 and 4TNV series engines on the FS-Curtis range of rotary screw compressors. These are larger portable diesel powered screw compressors wholly manufactured in Japan.
“We decided a long time ago to stay out of the cut-price, bargain basement section of the market,” Paul Korganow said.
“Our focus has been on quality and Yanmar has been alongside us all the way. They have helped us achieve our objectives in terms of performance and quality. The Yanmar brand continues to be an important aspect of our success.”
