Enhancing Stability with Smartgyro Marine Gyro Stabilizers
Bluegame, a leading brand of Sanlorenzo Yachts, and Smartgyro, innovators in gyro stabilization technology, have achieved a world-first by stabilising the Bluegame BGM75 multihull.
Bluegame collaborated with Smartgyro to improve the stability of their new luxury BGM75 catamaran, striving to set new benchmarks in comfort and performance. While multihulls are inherently stable, monohulls have become popular due to their use of stabilizers. In response to the rising demand for greater comfort and stability, Bluegame took on the challenge of outfitting the BGM75 with cutting-edge Smartgyro SG80 stabilizers. The aim of this project was to achieve, and potentially exceed, the comfort levels typically found in stabilised monohulls.
Innovative Design of the Bluegame BGM75
The BGM75, the first in the Bluegame BGM range, introduces a new segment to the market, redefining the catamaran landscape with its innovative design. With a reduced length-to-width ratio, the BGM75 features a seamless lower deck and an unprecedented full-beam owner’s cabin—both of which are remarkable firsts for a vessel of its kind. As with all Sanlorenzo yachts, the BGM75 is crafted as a luxurious motor yacht that just happens to have two hulls.
The collaboration between Bluegame and Smartgyro began in 2023 with a highly specialised project to stabilise the multihull, a challenge due to the unique dynamics of catamarans. Bluegame entrusted Smartgyro with this project, confident in their expertise and the technical prowess of their team.
Smartgyro’s Unique Approach to Catamaran Stabilization
Smartgyro provided Bluegame with critical data on the forces generated by their stabilizers, allowing the Bluegame R&D team to make the necessary adjustments to the hull design. This collaboration ensured that the Smartgyro units could be safely installed while maintaining the highest industry standards.
Stabilising a multihull required a novel approach, as there was no existing mathematical model for such vessels. Smartgyro’s R&D team had to design and test how two gyros could operate effectively in parallel across the catamaran’s twin hulls. Control systems and software modifications were developed specifically for this project.
Sea Trials and Final Results
Extensive sea trials were conducted to fine-tune the system, ensuring that the gyros operated effectively even when each hull was subjected to different forces. The results were outstanding, with significant roll reduction compared to a non-stabilised catamaran. The comfort now rivals that of a stabilised monohull.
According to Carlo Galli, CEO of Smartgyro, “We were very excited to work with Bluegame on this exceptional and pioneering project. We are delighted with the results that we managed to achieve and know that Bluegame’s new discerning BGM75 owners will appreciate the maximized comfort they will experience aboard. To achieve the impossible in collaboration with a company such as Bluegame, has been very significant for us. We worked together very closely throughout to ensure we achieved the best results possible for this stunning 75’ catamaran.”
Bluegame CEO Carla Demaria expressed her satisfaction: “Understanding the high standards of our expert and sophisticated clientele, we were resolute in pursuing this project, confident that it would surpass their expectations for comfort. We recognized the complexity of stabilizing two hulls in parallel, a challenge no one had tackled before. Smartgyro’s proven expertise and innovative approach instilled in us the confidence we needed. This has been a truly collaborative effort, with both teams working seamlessly together, enhancing each other’s strengths.”
Following the success of this ground-breaking gyro stabilization system on the BGM75, Bluegame and Smartgyro continue to collaborate on future innovations for multihull stability.
