In just seven months of operation, Commercial Cat Freedom Monarch has logged up a massive 1788 hours on the Yanmar GTE engines.   The Freedom Monarch is a beefy 29m aluminium passenger catamaran built by Aluminium Marine for the Freedom Fast Cats company.

Max Allen, the owner of Freedom Fast Cats, has every right to be absolutely delighted with the reliability of the Yanmar diesel engine powering his commercial catamaran.  Despite an intensive start to this cat’s life, there hasn’t been a single issue in the engine room.

“With a quick 1788 hours run up I couldn’t be more pleased with the Yanmar engines,” Max Allen said. “We haven’t had a mechanic step on board as the Yanmar engines are both running like clockwork.”
Max is so happy in fact with Yanmar when it came to choosing diesel to consider anything other than Yanmar.

“I’m on a great thing with Yanmar, so I’d be crazy to install anything else on any new vessel.”

Max Allen knows exactly what he wants when choosing a marine engine. The Yanmar 6AYM-GTE ticks all the boxes as it offers maximum power with minimal fuel consumption, low noise and low smoke.  Freedom Monarch is currently being chartered to Riverside Marine and is being used to ferry workers from Gladstone to Curtis Island as part of the refinery development on Curtis Island. The commercial cat does four return trips per day with each trip lasting 25 minutes.

Tony Webber, Freedom Monarch’s current skipper is in charge of the boat while on charter to Riverside Marine. Tony is exceptionally positive about the reliability and performance of the Yanmar.  The Yanmar engines perform very smoothly, they do not smoke said Tony.

“They have not given us any issues.  Reliability is really important considering we have up to 300 workers on board for each trip. There’s a lot of responsibility to ensure all the workers get to and from work on time, every day. It would be very costly for the company if the boat broke down at any stage.  Fortunately, Max specified a pair of Yanmar engines.”

When developing the commercial range of marine engines, Yanmar uses cutting-edge technology and advanced materials. The refined 6AYM-GTE commercial engine is no exception providing Yanmar customers with a competitive edge.

The 6AYM-GTE is a dedicated commercial marine propulsion engine.  It is a proven package being a 6 in-line cylinder block, long stroke design with an overall displacement of 20.379 litres. It develops an impressive 911mhp (670kw) at a conservative maximum engine speed of only 1938rpm. The key to the improved performance and efficiency of the 6AY Series is the use a new staggered injection nozzle and patented combustion chamber design named ASSIGN.  Developed by Yanmar originally for their large bore, low-speed propulsion engines, ASSIGN allows for a very wide rpm range that delivers outstanding fuel consumption. The 6AY Series is an IMO certified product with full classification certification to ABS/LR/RINA/NK available if required. A full range of factory approved installation accessories is also available including Yanmar manufactured marine gears.

The 6AY engine is easy to maintain with oil and filter replacement intervals specified by Yanmar at the commercial standard of 500 hours and a non-electronic governor configuration for simplicity.

Power is delivered smoothly, due to its optimum combustion conditions being maintained across a far wider operating range. This directly results in lower exhaust emissions and lower fuel consumption. The boost compensator also significantly reduces smoke under hard acceleration to the delight of everyone on board Freedom Fast Cats.

Chartering since 1967, Freedom Fast Cats offer several cruise options and individual charters.  Max Allen has been operating charter boats up and down the Australian coast for years and enjoys a wealth of marine experience.
