Synergy

More Power, Less Weight, Less Fuel

Synergy is a 53’ Ocean Alexander, a luxury cruiser built in 1990 and
one maintained in a condition that is a credit to the owner. The original
two stroke diesel engines were not worn out, but were lacking a little in power and reliability in the owners opinion for the 25 tonne hull.

“I just wanted a bit more reliability and get up and go” commented
Richard Wilson the proud owner of Synergy. I did my research on
repower options and asked around boating friends, professional boaters
and marine experts. There wasn’t a single person with a bad word to
say about Yanmar.

Ultimately I settled on a pair of the new Yanmar 8SY-900M, a compact V8
(15.6 litre) marine diesel that slotted into the engine room without having
to re-position any bulkheads.

As a result I increased power from 735 hp per engine to 900 mhp per
engine and reduced the overall engine weight by 120 kgs which was
an added bonus. Now my top end speed is 32 knots and we cruise at
a comfortable 22.5 knots at 1800 RPM. And fuel usage has dropped,
despite the big boost of some 330hp in power.

Having now been through the Yanmar experience I can say that I am
really, really happy with my new Yanmar engines and the increased
performance of Synergy.”
